Chapter 8: The Charade
Summer 9AD
Overwhelmed by their emotions, the 1st and 3rd Turmae of the Ala Germanici Barbari rode in silence. They had officially defected, yet they went back to the Roman camp to plan the destruction of the legions when they would be vulnerable on the march back to their winter camps in Aliso and Castra Vetera.
Feeling relief at having been accepted by the resistance, concern for his men, and hate, so much hate for Varus, Arminius thought about the months ahead. The resistance would cooperate with the invaders to lure them into complacency. At the same time, they had to continue building alliances with tribes that had already been subjugated by the Romans, to reach a critical mass; a force large enough to attack the three legions.
âOnce we start talking to tribes that are not part of the resistance yet, it will get dangerous,â Arminius eventually broke the silence.
âAye, chances of a traitor exposing our plan increase exponentially,â Ansgar agreed.
âThe next few months will get tense,â Grimwald growled.
But there was something else that bothered Arminius: Velleius Paterculus. He had saved the manâs life once and now he was effectively planning his death. That sort of meddling with fate would not sit well with the Norns.
âWe must save Velleius Paterculus during all of this. This includes his reputation,â Arminius said.
âI was worried that you would say that,â Grimwald growled.
âSeriously, we need to get him to travel back to Aliso before the legions march,â Arminius ordered and for the rest of the ride, they discussed different ideas to make that happen.
Back at camp, the 1st and 3rd Turmae waited patiently for their chance to implement the plan they had hatched with the Germanic resistance. Over a week after their defection, Arminius was finally called into Velleius Paterculusâ command post. At this point, the Roman camp had swallowed Segestesâ village and had grown into a small city; it took Arminius a while to get to headquarters.
Genuinely happy to see him, Velleius Paterculus personally briefed Arminius on his next mission; the mission that would begin the resistanceâs charade. The general pointed at a village about 40 miles south-east of their camp on the large model of the region.
âThere is a tribe around here that is reluctant to bend their knee to Rome. We will take the legions there next. I want you to have a look around first. Your uncle provided some intel, but I want my own eyes and ears on the ground,â Velleius Paterculus explained.
âAye, sir. Complacency kills,â Arminius answered.
âIt does my friend. See you in a week and now excuse me, I must deal with some personal correspondence,â the general ended the meeting and walked off to his private area in the large new building the principia had turned into. While Arminius strolled out of the complex, it hit him. He knew how to get his friend to leave early, but he would need the resistance to help him.
The following morning, they left the camp on the Hellweg, heading south.
